Matty Carson, the talented left-back for Reading FC, recently took a moment to reflect on his journey throughout the 2023/24 season. This period saw him actively involved with both the first-team setup and Noel Hunt’s U21s side, showcasing his versatility and commitment to the club’s success.
Over the course of the season, Carson featured prominently, making a total of 17 appearances for the senior team, with 10 of those appearances coming in crucial league fixtures. His contributions on the field were noteworthy, demonstrating his skills and potential as a valuable asset to the team.
However, despite his commendable performances and dedication, the club decided not to offer him a contract extension. This decision has resulted in Carson being released as a free agent, marking the end of his chapter at Reading FC.
Joining Carson in departure are two other full-backs, Nesta Guinness-Walker and Clinton Mola, further highlighting the changes and adjustments within the club’s squad structure.
Carson’s journey serves as a reminder of the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of professional football, where players navigate through highs and lows, opportunities, and challenges as they strive to make their mark in the sport.
“I’ve loved it here,” said Carson.
“Everyone has been brilliant, all the staff, Hunty, Ruben, Scotty JOP, Toby, I can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for me.
The debut, Stevenagem Cheletneham, those games were brilliant.”
He showed his quality last week for Hunt’s U21s side by scoring a stunning free-kick in the PL2 play-off semi-finals against Sunderland as the Royals were cruelly beaten 4-3 in extra-time.
“And finally scoring at RG2, it’s been a whirlwind,” he went on.
“The way we ended it was frustrating, but I, along with the boys, can look back on it with positivity.
“The fans helped me get through some really difficult times and have been incredibly welcoming to me since I joined the team.” I’m going to support everyone tonight (Monday) and it feels great to see them. Let’s create some noise.
“We really wanted to win that, and they were the 12th man toward the end.”
