Okay, let’s go, four thoughts on what is going to be a fun, 18 week journey this season:
DeMeco Ryans is hoping for several NRG Stadium celebrations in 2024, with the schedule now revealed.
DeMeco Ryans has officially disclosed the calendar for the multiple NRG Stadium celebrations he hopes to have in 2024. Jack Gorman took the picture. Fans of the Houston Texans may have felt a little out of place as tidbits of the team’s 2024 schedule began to surface on Wednesday morning and afternoon.
It makes sense, after all, that they would only ask the league’s most worthy teams to lead the way on Netflix’s inaugural NFL game broadcast on Christmas Day—a task the Texans will now have to take on in Week 17 versus Baltimore.
Indeed, feeling relevant again on schedule release is a bit foreign for us here in Houston. After all, consider the following:
1. The last Sunday Night Football game the Texans played was in Week 13, also in 2019, a win over the New England Patriots.
2. The last Monday Night Football game the Texans played was all the way back in Week 1 of the 2019 season, a road loss in New Orleans.
3. From Week 10, 2022 through Week 17, 2023, the Texans played 25 — TWENTY FIVE!! — straight Noon Central Time, Sunday kickoffs. That has to be a record.
According to DeMeco Ryans, he looks at the bye week as soon as the schedule is released. In the best scenario, it arrives in the midst of the season. For the Houston Texans, it did not transpire. The NFL, on the other hand, chose to ruin their Christmas vacation by scheduling three games in 11 days. As a result, the Texans’ bye week falls just before a brutal stretch run in the middle of December.
This gets us to the point of….. That Christmastime ordeal is really crazy. If you follow this blog, you are aware that one of my main concerns with this schedule was that the Texans not be selected as one of the four teams to play on Christmas Day.
As you can see above, that wish was not granted by the football gods. Not only will the Texans be playing on Christmas Day, but they will be playing the Baltimore Ravens. Additionally, the short week prior to this game, they will play the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on the road.
Additionally, they will play the Miami Dolphins the week before the Chiefs game. Add it all up, and the Texans are playing the Dolphins, Chiefs, and Ravens over the course of 11 days. Yikes.
Monday Night Football between the Texans and Cowboys—need I say more? Another game that Pendergast wishes the schedule creators had overlooked is the Thanksgiving Day game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Texans in Arlington. That was not the case.
A Monday Night Football game a few weeks before to Thanksgiving, however, was probably the next best thing. This Monday night game will have a ton of storylines, as is typical for such games. The rivalry between the two Diggs brothers, C.J. Stroud and Micah Parsons (the comedic duo of the 2020s), and the overall hostility that Houstonians have toward Dallas are all present. Will this be enjoyable?
