Carlos Corberán acknowledged that Albion did not meet the required level of competition during Saturday afternoon’s match against Sheffield Wednesday.
The Baggies suffered a 3-0 defeat against the Owls at Hillsborough, with goals scored by Anthony Musaba, Ike Ugbo, and Josh Windass.
Speaking to WBA TV after the match, Carlos Corberán provided an honest assessment of the team’s performance: “It was evident that we didn’t meet the necessary level of competition today to achieve the desired result. It’s crucial now to analyze the factors contributing to this. As a collective group of players and staff, we take responsibility and must find solutions after a result like this.”
“We made a change to play with Matt Phillips who is a winger instead of Alex Mowatt who is a midfielder. We kept Okay in the XI because we knew how important the set-pieces would be and how important the second balls would be.
“We wanted to get a winger into the team instead of having three midfielders in the XI.
“The first goal for them was a goal where we cleared the first ball but they put it straight back in and scored.
“We cannot make excuses and we have to manage those situations much better.
“If you look at the corners we created, we created some big chances from them. They only had two or three corners and we had five or six in the first period. As I say, we created some big chances from them but we couldn’t put the ball in the net.
“In the first half, we had better ball control and generated opportunities through crosses and goal-scoring chances. However, Sheffield Wednesday proved more clinical in their execution.
“The initial 20 minutes of the second half were our weakest phase. They capitalized on this period, scoring additional goals that ultimately influenced the outcome, and we couldn’t reverse it.
“We struggled to handle their aggressive pressing during this period. Once we adapted and found ways to overcome it, we gained more possession in the attacking half and created more opportunities.”
“Unfortunately, we just couldn’t find a goal. We have created enough things to take something away today.
“We have a big feeling to improve in the next game because we know we haven’t performed at our best level.
“It’s part of our job to digest this feeling and this game. We didn’t compete at the right level at times.
“We have to depend on ourselves to achieve what we want to achieve.”
