Stuart Attwell has once again found himself in the midst of a VAR controversy, this time for disallowing a goal from Wolves. This comes shortly after the uproar surrounding Nottingham Forest’s match at Everton.
Attwell, aged 41, was the VAR official overseeing proceedings at Stockley Park during Forest’s 2-0 loss to Everton, a match marred by controversy over what Forest deemed as three clear penalties denied. Following this, Forest expressed concerns about Attwell’s impartiality, citing his alleged support for their relegation rivals, Luton.
In his recent match duties, Attwell took on the role of on-field referee for the Wolves vs. Bournemouth game at Molineux. His decisions in the first half drew the ire of home fans, who saw their team ultimately lose to an Antoine Semenyo goal. Despite Wolves’ efforts, a goal by Hwang Hee-chan in the 65th minute was disallowed after a lengthy VAR review and a subsequent pitchside monitor check due to a potential foul.
Attwell’s decision not to rule out the goal sparked another wave of fury from the Molineux crowd, who have seen a string of decisions go against them this season.
Earlier this month, in their home game against West Ham, an injury-time equaliser was disallowed, leading to O’Neil tearing into officials so fiercely that he was later charged by the Football Association, reports the Mirror.
Following that, Bournemouth found themselves frustrated with Attwell as he issued Milos Kerkez a straight red card for a high tackle on Matt Doherty. VAR Darren England conducted a thorough review, yet the original decision to send off Kerkez stood despite the scrutiny.
The FA has already launched an investigation into Forest’s comments about Attwell following their social media statement released minutes after the final whistle.
“Nottingham Forest expressed their frustration with three missed penalty decisions, labeling them as extremely poor and unacceptable. They had previously raised concerns about the VAR’s alleged bias but were not satisfied with the response. The club stated that they would explore their options in response to these incidents.
In response to Forest’s comments, the Premier League expressed disappointment and highlighted that it is inappropriate to question the integrity of match officials. The Football Association (FA) confirmed an investigation into Forest’s statement, and the Premier League also announced its own investigation in accordance with league rules.”
