During the summer transfer window, Nottingham Forest will have several players considered surplus to requirements. A South American club has made an attempt to sign one of these players, who is not favored by Nuno Espirito Santo.

Club now open talks with Nottingham Forest player Gonzalo Montiel
It’s not surprising to hear that Nottingham Forest has decided against signing Montiel this summer. Journalist Damian Augusto Villagra reports that River Plate has initiated discussions with Montiel regarding a potential transfer for the right-back in the upcoming window.
Nottingham Forest had initially agreed to sign Montiel for £9 million, contingent on him playing in half of the club’s matches this season. However, this condition is no longer feasible, leading to speculation that Forest won’t be securing Montiel permanently in the upcoming transfer window.
River Plate holds a special place for Montiel, as he emerged from their youth system and played 140 matches for them before joining Sevilla. This connection could make a move back to River Plate appealing to him.
Forest have made the right call over erratic player
Montiel has performed well when given the opportunity at Nottingham Forest, making 15 appearances across all competitions despite facing periods of injury and non-selection.
Under Steve Cooper, Montiel didn’t seem to be favored, but his fortunes changed with Nuno Espirito Santo’s arrival, earning him more regular playing time and a chance to prove himself in the team.
Montiel has enjoyed some good moments and he’s registered three assists during his time at the club – but the positive moments have come too infrequently.
Currently, Nottingham Forest is benefiting from Neco Williams’ impressive performances at right-back. While Montiel did make a late appearance in the recent defeat against Tottenham, his time at Forest seems to be nearing its conclusion.
A move to River Plate could be ideal for Montiel, considering his affection for the club and the opportunity for increased playing time. Forest’s right-back position should remain strong, with options like Ola Aina and the promising Neco Williams, who at 22 years old, has the potential to hold down the position for years to come.
Forest should be well-stocked still when Montiel leaves. Ola Aina can operate at right-back and at 22-years-old, Williams is capable of holding down that spot for many years just yet.
