Juventus are reportedly interested in extending Carlos Alcaraz’s loan spell with Southampton for the next season, despite his limited playing time on the field. Alcaraz, a creative midfielder, joined Southampton on a six-month loan in January for €3.9m, with an option to buy for €49.5m at the end of the season.
The substantial amount involved in the deal for Carlos Alcaraz, especially considering his relatively low profile, is noteworthy. Cristiano Giuntoli, the director of sport, admitted that it was a last-minute decision. Giuntoli explained that they aimed to sign a player who wouldn’t disrupt the existing squad, opting for a young talent with promising prospects.
“We were presented with the opportunity just 48 hours before the deadline, leaving us no time to negotiate the release clause. We hold great respect for his club, and when the time is right, we will engage in discussions to explore our options.”
It would seem that moment is coming up, as Juventus want to make it abundantly clear they are not going to pay the nearly €50m, but would like to extend the loan for a full season.
This could be accepted by Southampton, especially if they fail to earn promotion back into the Premier League.
While La Gazzetta dello Sport had initially hinted at this plan, Calciomercato.com has now provided an update on the negotiations, indicating that there are discussions underway to agree upon a significantly lower buy-out clause.
Alcaraz has made just four Serie A appearances for Juventus, registering one assist during his time on the pitch. Currently, he is sidelined due to a thigh injury.
