BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION REQUEST TO THE UEFA

Brighton and Hove Albion have asked UEFA to investigate several incidents after their 4-0 Europa League defeat to Roma, including offensive signs and the VAR evaluation of a goal.

In the first leg of the Round of 16 tie at the Stadio Olimpico, the Giallorossi showcased an impressive performance, dominating the match against Brighton and Hove Albion. Thursday evening witnessed a commanding display from Roma, with goals scored by Paulo Dybala, Romelu Lukaku, Bryan Cristante, and Gianluca Mancini.

According to The Athletic, Brighton have made several requests to UEFA for further investigation after events in the Eternal City.

Prior to the match, reports had already surfaced regarding the unfortunate stabbing incidents involving two fans on the eve of the game.

However, the distressing situation escalated further as Brighton and Hove Albion revealed additional concerning details, alleging that during the match, objects such as coins and lighters were hurled at them within the confines of the stadium. The most curious request is for something that happened on the pitch, as VAR gave the all-clear to Mancini’s goal to put Roma 3-0 up, but suspicions remain of offside when he got on the end of Stephan El Shaarawy’s cross.

In contrast to Serie A, the Europa League does not implement the Semi-Automatic Offside Technology, which offers a precise outline of the players on the pitch at the precise moment the ball was played. This absence of technology adds complexity to the evaluation of offside incidents, as evidenced by the recent controversy during the match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Roma.

Despite inconclusive replays provided on television, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ultimately gave the all-clear. It is plausible that VAR had access to alternative camera angles not available to viewers, potentially influencing their decision-making process.
